Athens

Athens is the largest and the capital city of Greece. It is one of the oldest, most historic and most beautiful cities in the world. It is known as the cradle of Western civilization, a cradle of knowledge and philosophy, the birthplace of democracy, and the birthplace of the Olympics. Greece became a province of the Roman Empire and by the middle Ages was conquered by the by the Ottomans. When Greece gained independence in the 19th century, Athens was again chosen as capital. What is amazing about Athens and Greece is the preservation of their historic monuments and artworks. Many Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman buildings still exist. Many artifacts and archaeological discoveries are preserved in museums such as the National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum. Currently, Athens remains the center of Greek economy, finance, industry and tourism.
